Aukštaitija’s lake country in three days: forest roads, swimming stops and long, long evenings.
The idea
Two hours north-east of Vilnius, Aukštaitija National Park is a maze of over a hundred lakes stitched together by forest roads. It is the classic Bee weekend: short distances, water everywhere, and in midsummer the light barely leaves.
Day 1 — Vilnius to the lakes
Collect Bee, stock up at a market, and take the quiet roads north. By late afternoon you are parked near a lake with the kitchen open. Swim before dinner — it is mandatory in spirit.
Day 2 — The lake maze
Drive little, swim often. Wooden villages, an observation hill or two, smoked fish if you find it. Bee’s long fourth gear naps all day on these roads.
Day 3 — Slow return
A last morning swim, then the gentle drive back. If you have an extra day, the Labanoras forest detour is quietly spectacular.
Honest notes
In Lithuania, overnighting is easiest at designated campsites and marked stopping places in the national and regional parks — many are simple, beautiful and nearly free. Rules are enforced in high season; the Birbi guide lists the spots we actually use.
